A group of friends and I backpacked down the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Our first day of hiking ended with us going down a sketchy and steep ravine in pitch black darkness to reach our campsite. It may have been sketchy and we may have been more than tired, but the group’s vibe was so high we couldn’t help but laugh and enjoy the ride. Three days, 25 miles, 2,500 feet down, and 2,500 feet back up makes for one heck of an experience.

I’ve grown up in the beautiful desert landscapes of southwestern Utah, with Zion National Park as my backyard playground. I can’t help but be inspired by all the amazing colors and textures these warm and inviting sandstone cliffs hold. Nature has a way of helping us feel calm and at home in this often crazy world. I continue to be inspired by every new place I visit and every new adventure I go on.

Are there any nature enthusiasts/outdoor adventurists that particularly inspire you?

Van Gough all the way! What I wouldn’t give to see inside that beautiful man’s head just for a moment to experience how he saw our world. His ability to capture the vibrancy and grace of nature is awe inspiring. And of course John Muir– that man just understood.

What music accompanies you outdoors?

I don’t usually listen to music while in the outdoors, I prefer to be completely immersed in what the experience of the outdoors has to offer. BUT if I were to pop the earbuds in it would be anything folky!

Favorite meal to eat in the backcountry?

Surprisingly bagels, cream cheese, and jerky are a wonderful combination! I only advise cream cheese on colder excursions, though. Also you can never go wrong with a good trailmix!

What is your most prized piece of gear?

My Osprey backpack, I would bring that thing with me even on the smallest hike and it will always be full of the essentials…which means treats!

What is your favorite place to get outside? (or a favorite National Park?)

Hands down Zion National park! The second I enter those canyon walls I feel home and filled with so much peace. I gotta give a shout out also to my second favorite national park, Olympic National Park! I mean come on guys have you been?! No explanation needed.
